In general, I prefer American English (color just looks better than colour), which makes sense, since I am an American. I have to say, however, that I do prefer the british term "on holiday" to the american term "on break." "I'm on my Spring Break" sounds so much less happy than "I'm on my Spring Holiday."

Just say "February" as many times as possible. It's a really fun word to say.
Bring someone flowers. The arrangement above cost less than $5, including the thrift store glass for a vase. I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the mourning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-22098741475038665102013-01-13T21:03:00.003-05:002013-01-13T21:03:39.893-05:00How To Survive Winter, Part I: JanuaryAfter Christmas, it's easy to let winter be kind of depressing. Here are a few easy ways to enjoy it.
January
Eat clementines. Set them out where you can see them and enjoy the color.
String white lights up - around a towel rack, under your cabinets, over your bed, around a door. They don't have to be for Christmas only!
Get your vitamin D! Go for a walk when it's sunnyKarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-66010111526495126252013-01-08T21:11:00.002-05:002013-01-08T21:11:55.565-05:00Rachel
She came home from college! Now she's back there, of course, but I got to see here while she was here. We talked a lot. And laughed a good deal. She gave me a gift, and wrapped it in this adorable package (please note the torn paper on the tag - it's perfect).
Don't you just love seeing good friends?Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-39030177895219582302013-01-05T20:57:00.001-05:002013-01-05T20:57:59.421-05:00Surprise Visit The honeymooners surprised me today by stopping by on their way back home! They are too happy for words.
Don't worry, the dragons are henna. The smiles are real.
I finally got my photo with Kate. The only photo we took together the entire week that I was up there was in the dark, right before she and Ethan left. Now I have this one, too!

If you know me, you know that I love lists. Grocery lists, reading lists, lists of things to plant, pack or do. If it's a list, it's my friend. Add a new year into the mix, and you get a list of things to do for that new year! So, with some items serious, some lighthearted, I present to you Thirteen for '13:
Cook meals more often (enough of the salad, already.).

Kate and Ethan are married! I've known Ethan since I was two, and Kate since I was six. Spending the week before the wedding with Kate and her family was so. much. fun.
Kate's little sister taught me a couple new card games. She called me Carrot, I called her Cabbage (or Charlene, when she was sick of Cabbage).
This picture does not show how cold it was! Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-8967149403847134682012-12-13T15:40:00.001-05:002012-12-15T17:51:20.472-05:00Blessed
As I walked across campus this morning to take a final, I couldn't help but notice the frost. This was the latest in the morning that it had stayed, so far. You can see where the sun was beginning to melt the edges a bit. The whole campus was shimmering, and the reflections on the pond (which is affectionately nicknamed Walden) were lovely. We have a bit too much fun around here, as evidenced by the above photos. Last night we went caroling with friends from church, and tonight we're going out to look at the Christmas lights in our town. 'Tis the season!

Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite kind. This is my favorite recipe for chocolate chip cookies. I made these cookies last night. Coincidence? I think not! They turn out just like the bakery's cookies, soft and chewy, but without all the weird ingredients. I'm trying not to get too excited about these brussels sprouts. Honest and truly, they are the best I've ever had, and are super simple to make. The roasted cashews, the crunchy sprouts, the roasted cashews, the flavor, the roasted cashews... so good.
Aside from being an avid gardener, Papooh is an excellent cook. Here is his recipe for the best way to eat Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-45778987527405520062012-11-26T21:22:00.004-05:002012-12-01T18:09:43.681-05:00Thanksgiving Flowers
My dad's dad (we call him Papooh) is quite the gardener. We visited my grandma and him for Thanksgiving (Hello, six people and a dog in one vehicle for eleven hours), and he told me to take whatever flowers I liked and arrange something for the Thanksgiving table.
I've really enjoyed looking at the work of Amy Merrick, and tried to get that natural, over-flowing still life look.  Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13861574547915654525noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770157238766856679.post-18612369945163455452012-11-17T14:29:00.001-05:002012-12-01T18:09:55.850-05:00November Saturday
Today has been a good day.
Home with family
The farmer's market this morning, held in the fire house with its large, tall windows
A new crocheting project (the first in years! I'd forgotten how fun it is)
Mexican-style kale soup with a clementine
A cardinal's nest in my room

No matter how many socks I put in the washer, there will always be one without a match by the time the laundry is clean and dry. There can only be one explanation...
... the dreaded Sock Monster.

Chrissy and I went to Another School's library yesterday to check out some books on Bach (Beth needs them - I don't read about Bach on a regular basis). There were shelves of books on that composer alone! I finally just grabbed six that sounded good. I planted alyssum by accident this spring, thinking it was a different variety of flower. I'm oh-so-glad I made that mistake, though - it's bloomed since mid-summer, and only became prettier as the days grew colder. We had a hard frost last night which was tough on it, but I think it will last a little while longer.
