• Henty books - In Freedom's Cause, Under Drake's Flag, and In the Reign on Terror are the best.

• My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
• The works of Beatrix Potter
• The Scottish Chiefs by Jane Porter
• Most of the Holling Clancy Holling books, especially Paddle to the Sea
• Almost all the Jane Austen books
